CERAMIC & KINTSUGI
KAREN SWAMI gives life to clay, exploring its subtleties. In her studio gallery, flamboyant reds, translucent greens recall an ancestral practice and the venerable Japanese philosophy. There, chamotte stoneware endures the shock of temperatures; pieces are gently polished with an Agate burnisher and then smoked. Should they crack during firing, she knows how to instill new life into them. Where other might see the crack as a failure, Karen Swami restores the pieces with Kintsugi, a pure gold powder. Revisiting the past, she respectfully and ethically sublimates the cycle of life itself.
